The Lake of Two Mountains Power Squadron: Boat Training for safer waters |
The Canadian Coast Guard introduced new regulations in 1999 requiring all operators of power-driven boats to obtain an operator card to prove competency in handling power-driven boats.
The Pleasure Craft Operator Card is obtained by passing an exam of up to one hour, and, when boating, the card must be available to the Coast Guard to prove competency. The Lake of Two Mountains Power Squadron offers a course which prepares students for the exam. The course consists of eight hours of instruction, usually in two four-hour sessions, followed by the exam. The course includes a full training manual with all necessary information to successfully pass the exam. The Lake of Two Mountains Power Squadron offers the course for $50, which covers instruction, the BoatPro manual, and the exam. Successful students receive their Operator Card directly from the Coast Guard following processing. The Canadian Power Squadron is proud of the fact that it has successfully trained over 200,000 boaters across Canada to obtain their Pleasure Craft Operator Card! The Power Squadron does, however, underline that training for the Operator Card is a minimum requirement, and does not necessarily prepare boaters to tackle larger bodies of waters or more complicated emergency situations. For these situations, the boater should strongly consider taking CPS's Boating course followed by more advanced courses. Remember: the intent of Power Squadron courses is to train in safety on the water. When you are faced with difficult conditions on the water, which all boaters are exposed to sooner or later, your CPS training will come in useful, and might even save lives!
